Local Attractions

Mauprevoir is a picturesque village in the south of the department of Vienne, Poitou-Charentes. Renowned for its wonderful flower displays from May to October. Mauprevoir and the Hotel du Diamant are just a one hour drive from the regional airports of Poitiers or Limoges.

The village is known for its countryside walks, the 'Les Confidences de Mauprévoir' and the 'Au temps d'Aliénor'. A leaflet is available in the bar detailing the signposted routes which you can follow on foot or by bicycle.

Mauprevoir is also close to a host of leisure and historical attractions including fishing, kayaking, canoeing, bungee jumping, horse riding, shooting and swimming.

Cycling is a great way to explore the countryside around Mauprevoir and the perfect holiday activity for all the family. La Rochelle, with it's world renowned aquarium, is only two hours away, along with the superb beaches of the Atlantic coast. On the way to La Rochelle is Coulon, on the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise river in the Marais Poitevin. Known as the 'Green Venice', this unique and beautiful landscape of canals and waterways, many lined with ash, willow and poplars, covers 970 square kilometers and is the perfect location for boating or punting. The region is a favourite haunt of artists drawn by the light quality, water and wide variety in shades of green.

 

To the south of Confolens and a 50 minute dive away is Cassinomagus, an excavated Gallo-Roman town where you can see the original Roman baths and other remains which have been preserved in remarkable condition.

 

If you want to go even further back in history, take a one hour drive west to the Tumulus at Bougon, an extensive neolithic site and museum where you can see how people lived 6,000 years ago and go inside excavated burial mounds.

 

Circuit du Val de Vienne
Circuit du Val de Vienne is the second largest motor racing circuit in France with a good cross section of events to entertain all motor racing fans. The circuit is about 10 minutes drive from the hôtel, making the Diamant an ideal base for both competitors and spectators.

 

St Martin L'Ars
Just a few minutes drive away from the Hotel Du Diamant is the village of St Martin L'Ars with a large, family friendly lake and beach, children's playing area, walks, fishing and boating. Ideal for a day out relaxing, having a picnic or a picturesque stroll in the lovely countryside.

 

L'Isle Jourdain
L'Isle Jourdain is a picturesque hillside town spanning the River Vienne and about 15 minutes drive from Mauprevoir. It has a viaduct from which there is bungee jumping twice a week during the summer months.

There is a water sports club with water skiing and further on down the river is a kayak and canoeing centre. On the 20th of every month there is a huge market which takes over the whole town.

 

La Vallee des Singes 
Fantastic day out for all the family, 'Vallee des singes' or 'Monkey Valley', is a 15 ha wildlife park with more than 350 monkeys, gorillas and lemurs from around the world.

Part of the World Wildlife Federation, the park's emphasis is on providing as natural a habitat as possible for all the monkeys. They are completely free to forage among the trees separated from visitors by a network of streams.

There is a petting zoo of farm animals, two snack facilities, ice cream stands and lots of activities for the children. Approximately 40 minutes drive from the Hotel Du Diamant.

Confolens Music Festival
Just over the department border in the Charente is the delightful medieval town of Confolens. It spans the River Vienne and is steeped in history with interesting architecture.

For more than 50 years, the sub prefecture of 3000 inhabitants has been organising the most popular traditional arts festival in the world, attracting more than 200,000 visitors every August.

Billed as 'arts and popular traditions from all over the world', the week long festival takes over the entire town and includes international music, folkdance and shopping - a fantastic day out and only 25 minutes drive away.
